Chocolate and Christmas go hand in hand. But in addition to enjoying it in baked goods and other holiday treats, it’s also wonderful on its own paired with a glass of your favourite red wine. Here, Mark Anthony Wine & Spirits Fine Wine Specialist Joey Krueger recommends three bottles that pair with three Lindt Excellence Dark Chocolate bars.
Smooth & Creamy
Lindt Excellence 70% Cacao Dark Chocolate + Sterling Vintner’s Collection Cabernet Sauvignon
This Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in oak, which gives it warm and spicy notes of cinnamon and nutmeg that pair beautifully with the vanilla flavour profile and fruity notes of cherry and orange in the chocolate.
Fruit Forward & Nutty
Lindt Excellence 78% Cacao Dark Chocolate + Sterling Vintner’s Collection Merlot
The savoury nutty notes and high percentage of cacao in this bar are perfectly balanced with the fruit-forward flavour of this Merlot, which contains chocolate and intense berry aromas, and silky tannins.
Light & Spicy
Lindt Excellence Chili Dark Chocolate + Sterling Vintner’s Collection Pinot Noir
The heat of the chili paired with this Pinot Noir’s moderate alcohol level allows for a seamless integration of flavours. The wine’s notes of black cherry, vanilla and brown sugar further enhance the delicious buttery flavour of the chocolate.
How to Set Up a Tasting Station
- Set out opened wine bottles and glasses so that guests can serve themselves.
- Remove chocolate from packaging, and arrange Lindt Excellence diamonds on plates directly in front of their wine partner.
- Place tent cards next to each chocolate and wine pairing, noting the chocolate flavour, as well as the aromatic and flavour properties of each.
Another Perfect Pairing
If you prefer spirits to wine, try dark chocolate with Scotch or Cognac, which have similar flavour notes such as caramel and vanilla.
